2.3 How Does Phonology, Syntax, and Lexicogrammar, in English Language interconnect?

Updated: 1 day ago

English Morphology is a field of study that explores the formation of words. As mentioned by its name, components of the process came from different backgrounds, drawn to compose something new and meaningful especially for you to pronounce it fluently. You may look up into your dictionary, and in many cases, many people have no idea how the phonology of word works in the background of your learning curve. In fact, many English teachers neglect to introduce English phonology as part of the lecture. It is because the topic is rather relevant to Linguistics itself than to contemporary English. Thanks to their exploration, there exists a sequential correlation between Phonology, Lexicogrammar, and Syntax, respectively. To keep everything simple, I will not go into details of each topic in the following paragraph; instead, I will briefly share the key thoughts of it. I highly recommend doing research on your own for more clarifications.
Phonology in general studies the sound of words and speech produced in the systemic pattern. The study of phonology is not limit to contemporary English, but the fun fact is many of the applied linguistics studies used English as the prime language in the research. Phonetics is a branch within the system exploring the physical production of sound. Phonemes rule the pronunciation of words. The collection of words can therefore be formed in a structural pattern such as the syllables’ pronunciation, intonation, stress displacement, and the use of phonetics- vowel and consonant etc. It creates a restriction on the systemic pattern that establishes the ground for syntax (sentence structure) and lexicogrammar (the use of grammar). Imagine you are trying to complete a sentence, have you ever come across any word that has a duplicated structure in a row? No! Let’s explore some basics.
For sound-producing content, there are vowels and consonants, the two main categories for the field of vocal production. Vowels are sounds produced by the configuration of tongue disposition, height, the oral shape without blocking the airflow. For example, vowels are enlisted in English Alphabet form as A, E, I, O, U. Some research has found that there were total of 20 vowels in English. It consists of 7 short vowels, 5 long vowels, and 8 diphthongs. As an example, it states /æ/ (apple), /e/ (egg), /ɪ/ (pig), /ɒ/ (odd), /ʌ/ (up),/eɪ/ (day), /iː/ (eat), /aɪ/ (sky), /əʊ/ (no), /uː/ (you)[1]. At each level of vowels, it differs between the short form and the long form. On the contrary, consonants are sounds silenced within the pronunciation itself. It sounds as a form of vocal cord vibration and voiceless breezing between your lip, teeth, and tongue. There are 21 consonants in Alphabetic order- B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z. and 24 phonetic sounds - /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /f/, /v/, /θ/ (thin), /ð/ (this), /s/, /z/, /ʃ/ (she), /ʒ/ (vision), /h/, /m/, /n/, /ŋ/ (sing), /l/, /r/, /w/, /j/ (you), /ʧ/ (chair), /ʤ/ (job).[2] More categorisation of consonants had been created for different word setting. For learning the specification of vowels and consonants, please conduct more research on your own. The above is for illustration purpose only. Have you realised two things: vowels and consonants cannot overlap each other, and the pronunciation of the word varies at the root location to stress. Bounded by these constraints, we can therefore adopt from the system of English phonology to ‘layout’ a baseline for the formation of statement and grammar structure.
Syntax is a product of the combination of linguistics and words. It sets the governing rule of how words are arranged within a sentence, a phrase, or a clause. Syntax enhances the smoothness of conversations, the clarity of expression, the coherence of communication. For instance, sentence formation relies on the Subject-Verb-Object form. Now under the placement of categorised words for the subject- a noun or pronoun, the verb - an action of some sort, and the object - again noun or pronoun. The clear layout of sound drives the phonetic components of the words by limiting the overindulgence of the phonetic degree itself. The same applies to phrases (statement without any subject or verb) and clauses (statement without a subject). Poetry is another field where Syntax is heavily weighted. Words headed for the rhythm should be vociferously connected between lines. By breaking sounds of the structure in a scientific form, linguistics studies help English learner to develop a good speaking and content-writing naturally and effectively.
Like Syntax in the field, Lexicogrammar serves as the final orchestration for the composition. At the final stage, when you put the parts together, it becomes Lexicogrammar. The word lexicogrammar combines the meaning of ‘lexicon’ (vocabulary) and ‘grammar’ itself. Other than a complete revision, lexicogrammar functions as words and grammar combined into different systemic patterns based on the sound layout. First, you can make words take upon a grammatical term in some pattern such as ‘depend on + sth/ gerund for continuous tense. Second, you can compare the variety of form when you adopt different grammatical pattern such as ‘he steals the pencil’ vs ‘the pencil is stolen’. Third, you can put such grammatical pattern into different phrasal formats. There are no fixed rules about the innovation of lexicogrammar as we move on doing more research and thus using language in an evolving direction. It is flexible but impactful to the development of English common usage.
The result is influential to the foundation-building of English Language. Do not underestimate the impact of sound, your concise pronunciation makes a difference while speaking in appropriate dialects confidently. To recap, the phonology of English prescribes the elements related to the sounds of words either in the physical production of sound, making a conditional syllable structure in the pronunciation and arrangement, including the vowels and consonants of the word itself. For the integration of words, the order is governed by Syntax. The order of words makes sure we speak in proper arrangement as fluently and understandable as a common language. There comes consolidation between the words and grammar from what is called Lexicogrammar. It enables us to give the order pattern of words and grammar a deeper meaning at higher dimension.
By showing the interconnection between English Phonology, Syntax and Lexicogrammar, learning English from grammar-to-vocabulary is somewhat a mistake. We often ignore the backbone of the system by taking a shortcut and convenient way to rise to the top. In fact, it is a shaky top. The self-neglect in the linguistics point of view reduced your willingness to learn and demotivate you to explore further topics. For the record, I am here to call against the traditional teaching syllabus of English (as a second language) in high school.
