1.3 A Moveable Feast of Your Own: Limitless Space and Freedom

Before moving into the hardcore material of general English, I would like to have few words in this transition section.  If there were no limitations whatsoever on English general usage, why does it matter for one to improve continually? The answer is thus straight-forward and simple: you must be honesty about who you are and where you at the level. Level consistency is the key element to stay ahead of the ordinary curve. How you speak determines your writing level and thus demonstrates your understanding through listening (absorbing) from your living environments. For example, teenage trends to speak good English and writing contemptuously from pop culture such as movies, competitive sports, TV programs and music. For word-to-word to phrases to idioms to slangs, it is a non-stoppable learning curve on your own, converging into social focus points with lucid self-interest.

Do not let patriotism impediments the ability of language-learning. Many elderly warned me about the racial discrimination when I travelled overseas-the United States and United Kingdom in particular. But for the rebuttal record, they shall keep their mouth shut as many of them had not been travel overseas especially visiting to the cultural root of local community. Yes, I admit there are some dangerous zone or outlandish neighbourhood that you should not visit, and of course shall you be aware of criminals. But for the most part, people ‘play’ with you while seeing you inexplicable to culture. I understand that there are some cultural propagandas curtails the superfluousness of another, limiting one language learning motivation by self-elimination. Yet, it is a problem of critical thinking in which I will discuss it further.

In most cases, your accent determines who truly you are, where do you come from, what is your background. You can certainly argue with me with a list of complications; however, personal perception matters. If one had lived in the United States for more than twenty-years, had a decent job, but could not either speak or understand any English, I bet you would discriminate him even though you were both in the same race. I believe it is a fair game.

In the good old days of working as a teaching assistant in English, many Asian students came to me for proofreading particularly on Grammar. But they had a bigger problem; they could not translate their request into a full (complete) sentence. And this was back before the A.I era where students had to learn from the basics. Why did they come to the US by paying million to get a degree without fully proficient in English? And later at the time of writing this article, in mathematics too. Where was the integrity of learning? I assumed that many of them paid for the ghostwriting and pretended to be authentic in college. In fact, many American students had the exact opposite even for most of them spelling could be a bit challenge and thereof the words chosen in their writing. They concentrated in the overall presentation of the article, which sometimes entertaining, impactful, and often creating new ideas in our feedback-loop meeting session. There existed two differ universe in the same classroom; perhaps we should have some form of crossover.

Step back and relax, preparing for any social encounter in your community. Any good conversation brings you conventional feelings about language, culture, joy, and satisfaction in life; the only prerequisite is to catch the moment without ambiguity, message that is straight to your heart, loud and clear. This reminds me of Hemingway’s A Movable Feast. It was written like a memoir of craft reflecting his journey with his friends in Paris. Perhaps there are moment of ups and downs in life. It’s fine to be emotional. But remember to get up in the pain after the painful fall. The same applies to education and learning new skillset. And thanks to the Internet world, you can instantly light up the sky with a few clicks of your mouse and typing of keywords. It is also a fair game.

Speaking of Hemingway’s work, critics often described his work as blunt, precise, understandable, short and strong. You might know it if anyone of you here had finished his book The Old Man and the Sea and had survived throughout the plain English style story-telling method. In the English usage of this book, he adopted short but declarative simple sentences, and common but understandable vocabularies; the story-telling technique did a powerful job in linking common knowledge (of fishing), survival, problem-solving, communication, and philosophy as one masterpiece. So, it raises a question: does writing in simple English disqualify someone honorable from winning a Nobel Prize in Literature? The history spoke for itself already.

In the mastery of English, there is no single rule or boundary in any mean. In any formal learning method whether it is in speaking, writing or reading, you must be bold and consistency about learning. There are thousands way to success, and of course there are encouragement on you destined pathway. Search for continuity in observed clarity, integrated authenticity, and bravery of your own. By staying true to your unique voice, remaining open to cultural influences, and persisting through challenges. Any language-learning journey is both rewarding and transformative, despite I would focus on English-learning experience. Ultimately, the pursuit of language proficiency is a lifelong feast. Do not heavily reply to a few opinionated sources. You should be the one that is always within reach for those willing to explore and evolve.
